Having more space and a more open layout is very exciting. Then on top of that we got approved to move into a larger home, which we are so very thrilled about. I really struggled with the lack of structure and decent family rhythm. Our dynamics have shifted some and we felt like we had a lot of chaos, especially around Daylight Savings ending.

I began feeling really unwell with the end of my pregnancy. October was a crazy whirlwind month for us. Things have been very busy the last few months. We will be doing at least a twice year big purge of all our things in anticipation of the holiday seasons in November and May. Stocking stuffers would be things like art supplies for the kids and my parents would get things like homemade soap and knit dish towels worked on by Love Bug. We will work on giving and encouraging the children to give homemade gifts as well. We are hoping to buy family members new books and maybe a handful of small gifts totally less than $50 for opening on Christmas day. Things such as Yule gifts (typically something small, consumable or used by the whole family), the ornament exchange and the Christmas Eve Box will stay. One of the first things is deciding what parts we want to retain from how we do the holidays. So we are hoping to implement some different ideas for this years holiday season. To us it does not make sense to just buy in to buying things for the holiday. They have all the clothes and toys and stuff that they could want or need. We feel that our children are never lacking for anything. We want them to find the joy in the different celebrations throughout the year and have positive experiences and build memories. And that is not an experience that we want for our children. If we are honest with ourselves, most celebrations throughout the year are overwhelming. Although it can be quite fun, its also quite overwhelming for our boys and their sensory needs. Our holidays are typically lasting a week long with Mother's Night, Yule, Christmas Eve on the 23rd, Man Cub's birthday, Christmas Day, Boxing day. We have been looking at and thinking about how to change our Christmas-time since about Boxing Day of 2017.

They can get into their new pajamas and put a movie on, drink hot coco or cider and just have a calm and relaxing evening. The children get a 'Christmas Eve Box' that has new pjs, christmas dvds, sometimes a warm blanket or stuffed animal, socks, etc. Typically we do a seafood meal that night. We celebrate it on the 23rd of December as Man Cub's birthday is the 24th and we frame that day to be all about him. Anyone can get something to eat whenever they want and there is not a ton of extra work going into the meals for the day.Д¬hristmas eve is a pretty calm affair. Having cold-cuts and fruit available and left overs from the previous few days are also helpful. My favorite thing about our holiday meals is setting up several crock-pots on Christmas day so that people can eat something warm whenever they are hungry. For us no one has the extra 'spoons' to do multiple big fancy sit down meals with the fine china and linens and pulling out all the stops.

We feel that holidays should be enjoyable and not full of stress.

Within the last few years we have made some positive changes on how we celebrate Christmas with my family. So we are looking at ways to change our celebrations throughout the year. But that doesn't really fit with our desire to have less things in our space. Many of these events have a focus on stuff, giving stuff, getting stuff etc. So clearly as we are purging and getting rid of stuff, the idea of holidays, birthdays, celebrations around the wheel of the year are brought into focus. We are setting things into groups of keep, sell on craigslist/facebook, donate, yard sale.

Having less to take out and put away also gives us more time to spend as a family instead of being caught up cleaning all the time or feeling like we are constantly falling behind. Less clutter and a simpler life really helps everyone's mental health in my home. Sometimes it feels like we are drowning in stuff. One of my 2018 goals is to get rid of 75% of the things that we own.

We have been working hard the last few weeks on looking at what we have and aiming for less.
